“Opportunity Knocks” All The Time Are You Ready To Take The Plunge And Create Your Own Product?

by admin on January 14, 2011

A lot of  people I meet who are new to internet marketing, shrivel when they think about creating their own products because they find it hard to come up with pristine concepts for a brand new product.

Truth be told, most ideas you come up with these days which you may think are unique or original, have already been thought of or introduced by someone else at some point before you thought of it.

The fact is you don’t have to come up with a brand new product to make a success of it.  Let me give you an example:

Do you remember the British TV talent show in the 70s called “opportunity knocks”?

It started in 1956 and ran for a few months before making a comeback years later, when it was revived in 1964 and ran for many years. It switched from ITV to  BBC and produced a number of talented acts before ending in 1990. I used to watch that show in the 80s and remember it being very popular.

Most of the elements of that show were clearly visible in another, more recent British program “Britain’s Got Talent” which was created by record company executive Simon Cowell.

Even “The X factor” is very similar to that show. The only difference is that it’s kind of updated and fitted with new components to make it more glamorous and more in tune with today’s demanding audience. They use an interactive voting system, they use a lot of lights and special effects but most importantly they get the public intensely involved.

Both of these shows are basically the same concept as “Opportunity Knocks”.  Same product with a few slightly different ingredients. In other word, they are the same horse with a slightly different saddle!

“Opportunity Knocks” was in fact a radio show at first and started in 1949 (before most of us were even borne!) prior to moving to TV. So in actual fact the same show kept being revived by adding different hosts, different names and slightly different features for over forty years.

So it is possible to take an old product, revamp it, add a new edge to it, give it a new title then present it as a brand new product and it’s not dishonest or unethical to do this because once you add your own touches to a tiered old product, you have actually created a new product or a new version of a product.

Take the iPhone, blackberry or any other smart phone for that matter. How many different versions are there? And are they all not really, basically the same principal?

The most important thing to consider before creating a product is to find out if it is in demand, if people are looking for it and willing to pay for it.

Again using those TV talent shows as example, you can see that they all have one very distinct commonality and that is they all use a voting system that involves the public.  So in the case of the X factor for instance, the producer is sure to make huge profits from the wining act because it was actually the public that picked it in the first place and ultimately will make it a success.  How do you think Simon Cowell made it so filthy rich?!  He cashed in on what the public were asking for.

You don’t always have to have a brand new idea in order to create a new product. What you do have to do is to make sure your product is sought-after.

So in Conclusion:

What you need to realise is that you can’t force-feed the public with a product or service that they don’t want or haven’t asked for.  The only way to be able to sell something to the masses is to find out what they want and then give it to them.

You don’t really need to re-invent the wheel.  All you have to do is to find something that’s been around, proved to be popular and is still in demand then you add your own stamp to it, make it a little or a lot different than the original and Boom! You’ve got yourself a brand new product.  which has already been approved by the public and will sell like hot cakes!

It doesn’t matter what it is, it could be a radio or TV show, an E-book, a software, whatever. If it’s something that can feed a hungry market, you’ve got it made without a doubt.
